Glossary of Terms

Plotmapping: a direct correlation between the subtextual details of two or more movies that occurs with sufficient frequency as to be non-random/statistically significant, and therefore beyond simply coincidental
Donor (parent) movie: a movie whose subtextual details are reframed to create and support the action in another movie, referred to as the target movie
Target (child) movie: a movie that inherits subtextual details from one or more donor movies
Plot station: any subtextual details from a donor movie (including plot beats, music, colors, actions, dialogue meaning/intention, blocking, framing, and more) that reappear in new forms in a target movie
Correspondence: the one to one correlation between a plot station in the donor movie and its new form in a target movie
Mirrored shots: a shot in a target movie that is reversed left to right from its initial presentation in the donor movie of origin
Matching shots: a shot in a target movie that is directly duplicated without directional reversal from its initial presentation in the donor movie of origin
Shark's fin: a plot station in the target movie that is so remarkably and uniquely similar to its correspondence in the donor movie that it becomes an indicator of potential plotmapping between the two films
Time-lensing: a sequence of correspondences whose plot stations occur chronologically very close together in the donor movie (seconds or minutes) but are spread out over an extended time frame (weeks, months, potentially years) in the target movie -- or vice versa
Transition point: a major time stamp that reiterates the message of the movie or displays some aspect that the movie wants to put forward; these include the end/start of acts, the quarter and midpoints, as well as twelve smaller possible episodic divisions
Episodes (or Houses): division of the runtime of any film (usually without end credits) into twelve equal portions of time, which can provide more insight into how it handles its plotting and what portions of it are most influenced by plotmapping
Tipped its hand: whenever a target movie -- in dialogue, shot, or other device -- makes a direct reference to one of its donor movies
